What is the course about?

Practice and improve your tap skills and increase your vocabulary of steps and sequences. Suitable for students with a strong foundation in tap who want to improve their technique and increase their understanding and confidence in a variety of rhythms, tempos and syncopation. You will also learn and perform a fun and interesting routine.

What will we cover?

You will review basic Rhythm Tap (American) steps including, Cramp Rolls, Time Steps, Paradiddles and introduce new steps such as Wings, Pickups and Maxi Fords. We will choreograph a routine and perform as a group as well as being encouraged to perform steps and sequences solo.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Demonstrate and perform all the basic steps to a good standard.
Perform a variety of American time steps including Wings and travelling Time Steps.
Recognise different dance tempos
Use and perform various classic American steps in a fun routine.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a practical dance course combining technique and performance skills.
The course is suitable for students with a good tap foundation.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Follow spoken instructions
• Use numbers to recognise rhythms within dance.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will learn through practical class work individually, in pairs and as a group. Teaching will include practical exercises, discussion, observation and supportive feedback to both individuals and the group. You may be required to practice your learning in pairs as well as a whole group. The class will take place in a well equipped, modern studio with music accompaniment. It is essential to be ready to start on time.

HEALTH CHECK
You will be asked to participate in rigorous activity from time to time. Please consider whether you could do this, if you are in any doubt consult a medical practitioner.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

It is essential to have good shoes and tap shoes are essential for this class. Having the correct shoes can really improve your technique and give you a much better feeling for the style of dance. The tap shoes should be fitted with tap plates using screw fittings (no rivets). There are specialist dance wear stockists in and around Covent Garden and online which can provide appropriate footwear. Clothing should be comfortable and loose fitting to allow for change in body temperature.
