What is the course about?
The causes and consequences of the Battle of Lepanto in 1571 between the so-called Holy League led by the Papacy against the Ottoman empire.
What will we cover?
We will look at the events that led up to the Battle and consider how far the result impacted upon the so-called decline of the Ottoman empire. Artists were quick to paint large canvasses extolling the victors but one wonders as to the tangible benefits beyond the psychological impact on European perceptions of ‘the Turk’.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Identify the members of the Holy League who fought against the Ottomans at Lepanto
• Describe the symbolism used by European painters such as Titian and Veronese to commemorate the Battle
• Debate upon the consequences of Lepanto on East/West relations.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for anyone with an enquiring mind and an enthusiasm for British history. No previous knowledge is
necessary but a good understanding of English is essential.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
There will be an informative talk, using PowerPoint, during which class discussion will be encouraged.
We shall use small group work to analyse original sources and a range of handouts will be available for discussion
purposes.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
There are no additional costs other than note-taking materials.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Please see the history section of the website for further details.
