What is the course about?
This is an introductory course on nature and the science of the changing seasons. We will explore species identification in the Autumn; natural habitats and how they change in the autumn season; and what we can do to support and encourage wildlife at this time of year.
What will we cover?
- how and where to spot different species
- How habitats change during the autumn season
- how trees prepare for winter
- the impact of decreased light on nature
- how to identify common fungi.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
• Understand why different species can be seen during the transition from summer to autumn
• Explain how trees prepare for winter - changing leaves and the reasons.
• Evaluate the impact the decreased light has on nature
• Assess how changes within different habitats occur at this time of year
• Identify common fungi that can be seen at this time of year
• Evaluate how to encourage nature at this time & use tools (e.g. Apps) to help us identify trees, plants and animal life.
• Assess appropriate locations to spot different signs of nature.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This is a basic introductory course and no prior knowledge of the subject is necessary. However, you will
need a good grasp of Englishto participate fully in discussions, together with a willingness to engage in discussions and any group work in class, as this will be an interactive lecture in which learners are invited to share their thoughts.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This interactive science course will be taught through a mixture of illustrated talks and discussions. There will be an opportunity to discuss what you have learned about your natural environment in the class.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring a notepad and pen if you wish to make notes. There are no additional costs for the course.

Chantal, (B.Sc.Hons) is a Zoologist and volunteer London National Park City ranger. An avid hiker, she loves taking in the joys of our diverse natural world. With the UK being one of the most nature depleted countries in the world, she is passionate about educating others to take notice of, build connections with and enjoy nature and the environment that surrounds us, in particular, the biodiversity and varied habitats found in our cities and urban areas. A Shinrin Yoku practitioner, she has organised nature walks around London whilst also communicating the actions we can take to add value to both the natural world and our own lives.
