What is the course about?

More information will follow as soon as possible.

Your tutor will be Sunday Abraham Ogunode, who teaches a series of courses on African history and politics.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable both for newcomers to the subject and for those who have some background knowledge. You will need a good grasp of English to keep up with the course. An ability and willingness to explore relevant shared resources will increase what you get out of the course.

However, as with most of our history, politics and current affairs courses, an open mind and a respectful willingness to listen to and think about views with which you do not always agree are more important than specific levels of skills.

Given the sensitive nature of some of the topics the course will explore, we also expect everyone to engage group and class discussions with respect and the willingness to learn from others.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

PowerPoint will be used to illustrate key points and then we will be reading and discussing contemporary sources (in translation). You will be encouraged to share your thoughts and ideas in a relaxed and friendly environment. Occasionally reading outside the class will be encouraged with a worksheet to complete, but is not obligatory. Please note that this will no doubt assist your quick grasp of the course thrust if you can follow it through with constant reflections on lessons learned. Purposively selected YouTube videos relevant to the course shall be provided as digital illustrative learning aid.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no other expenses other than note-taking materials. You are not expected to purchase any reading material. All essential reading will be supplied via Google Classroom for you to download.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

HPC238 - The Struggles for Genuine Ownership: Perspectives on Decoloniality in West Africa
HWH206 - From Rhodesia to Zimbabwe: the Revolution of Imperial Power
HWH211 - South Africa: Apartheid and the Quest for Self Determination.
