Arguably, no other music has been as influential as Cuban music in the 20th century. From being the foundation of Salsa music in the Americas, to its return home in Africa, the Cuban sound has travelled far and wide. But how did this relatively small island in the Caribbean have such a large musical influence, and why was it so readily accepted?

What is the course about?

In this course, we learn about the history of Cuban music: from its beginnings in Colonial Cuba; to the period of the Republic; to the Revolution; and finally to the present day. We analyse the mix of cultures - African, Hispanic, and Indigenous - which formed the Cuban identity and sound, as well as foreign influences such as American Jazz and European Classical Music.

We shall learn about the many different genres present within Cuba, what stylistically differentiates them, as well as their key proponents in each era. It is impossible to separate Cuban music from politics, so all of the music will be contextualised against the political zeitgeist of the time.

What will we cover?

This is an incredibly deep topic, so this course can only provide an introductory overview to Cuban music. Each lesson will focus on one era or one genre, accompanied by key listenings. For those interested in further research, a plethora of texts and documentaries are available. A key text of this module is Ned Sublette’s ‘Cuba and it’s Music’ (2004), which provides an excellent overview of this subject. Several journal articles can also be recommended for those wishing to delve deeper into issues surrounding Cuban music, such as race, religion, and gender.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

1. Gain an understanding of the evolution of Cuban music, along with it’s various constituting genres and key proponents
2. Musically understand key components of Cuban music such as the clave, and how to differentiate the different genres.
3. Understand the political context which influenced the music of each era
4. Learn about the formation of a Cuban identity with its various roots, influences, and issues.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

No prior knowledge is required, however a basic understanding of music theory as well as region specific knowledge would be useful.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including short lectures, slide shows and discussions, practical demonstrations and guided listening sessions. Courses use a variety of materials including audio recordings, DVDs and youtube clips.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
