What is the course about?

Welcome to our philosophy course! Whether you are a beginner or have some philosophy background, this course is designed for you. Our primary focus will be on exploring significant philosophical concepts like happiness and wellbeing, primarily through the perspectives of both Western and Eastern philosophers, notably Aristotle and Buddha.

What will we cover?

We will present a Western classical viewpoint on wellbeing and happiness, focusing predominantly on Aristotle. Our analysis and discussions will specifically delve into the notions of happiness, eudaimonia, and living well. Subsequently, we will analyse an Eastern perspective, concentrating on Buddha. This will involve an exploration of concepts such as happiness, suffering, the Four Noble Truths, the Middle Path and meditation. A comparison between these two perspectives will be undertaken, presenting ample opportunities for discussion and critical evaluation.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- have a clear understanding of the concept of wellbeing and its development throughout history
- develop your unnderstanding of specialised terminology and philosophical language relevant to the course
- develop your critical thinking skills and analytical rigour
- develop important life skills like social and emotional intelligence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is designed for both beginners and individuals with some philosophical knowledge. While a background in philosophical studies is not required, basic analytical and critical thinking skills are essential. An open mind and a willingness to listen to and think about views with which you do not always agree are more important than specific levels of skills.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course will enhance your analytical and critical thinking abilities through engaging activities, both collaborative and individual. Sessions will encourage active participation via discussions and group activities. Multimedia resources, especially video clips and visual stimuli, will be incorporated to enhance each learner's comprehension and knowledge. Occasionally, you will be assigned philosophical extracts to read before the next lesson, but rest assured that the language difficulty will be appropriate for the class level

Your tutor will be Cristina Paterno, who holds two Honours Degrees in Philosophy and Science of Education with History. She worked as a researcher and lecturer at the University of Cagliari in Italy, focussing on classical and modern European and Asian philosophy with a particular emphasis on metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy. She moved to the UK in 1994 and taught at universities, adult education institutions, and secondary schools, as well as successfully assumed leadership roles, including that of a head of department and more recently as coordinator of Italian at Imperial College London. Her teaching style is engaging and transformative, characterised by interactive strategies tailored to accommodate diverse learning styles. Cristina’s commitment to incorporate human rights into the fabric of her teachings symbolises her conviction in the practical implications of philosophical theories and her belief in the real-world implications of philosophical ideas. For Cristina philosophy isn't just an academic pursuit, it is a means to foster critical thinking, empathy, and a deeper understanding of the human experience.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Exercise book and pen. Reading material will be provided.
