What is the course about?
We will be learning about Cicero, one of the most influential and prolific Roman writers, his life and works.
What will we cover?
We will study (in English but with some reference to Latin) a range of Cicero’s writings from court speeches, to philosophical tracts and letters. We will also consider the cultural and political contexts of his works.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Have a better understanding of Cicero’s corpus and the times in which he wrote.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
No previous knowledge is required but those with a keen interest in the late Roman Republic and its literature are encouraged to sign up.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be taught using Latin and English materials. Some reading will be set between lessons.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
No. Bring writing material.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Another course on ancient literature from September.
Sean has been teaching Greek and Latin and History for a long time. He has taught in England, America, Europe, and Asia. After all this, he is still as much in love with the Ancient World as, when he was seven, he first stumbled across a retelling of the Iliad and Odyssey. In addition, he has written more than forty books, and is generally reckoned rather a good second-rate novelist.
