What is the course about?

The course will begin with an introduction to the safe use of tools and equipment, followed by the making of a pendant and textured silver ring band. The projects will serve as a practical introduction to measuring, sawing, heating metal, soldering, basic forming, finishing and polishing.

What will we cover?

This short course will include measuring, cutting metal, heating, texturing, soldering,filing, sanding and polishing. We will also cover safe working practice.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- measurements for a ring 
- cut and anneal metal 
- texture metal using hammers and punches 
- file, sand and polish metal 
- form metal for a simple ring band implementing various techniques 
- demonstrate an understanding of basic jewellery-making, including health and safety issues

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is for complete beginners in jewellery-making, as well as those with some experience who might prefer to take a shorter course, or for those who specifically want an introduction to this subject area. 
 
You must be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information, and be prepared to take part in group discussions. You should be happy using numbers and able to do simple measurements and calculations. 
 
You are advised that sensible footwear must be worn in studio 308. For health and safety reasons, no sandals, open shoes & small pumps can be worn – even in hot weather. 

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through practical demonstrations both to the group and to individuals. Group discussions and feedback are encouraged.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

City Lit provide all general tools and equipment you will need for jewellery making. A reasonable amount of base metal ( copper and brass ) sheet and wire are available for your use. Enough silver to make one ring will be included in the course fee. You will need to supply your own sketchbook/ notebook.
