What will we cover?

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

More information will follow as soon as possible.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable both for newcomers to the subject and for those who have some background knowledge. You will need a good grasp of English to keep up with the course. An ability and willingness to explore relevant shared resources will increase what you get out of the course.

However, as with most of our history, politics and current affairs courses, an open mind and a respectful willingness to listen to and think about views with which you do not always agree are more important than specific levels of skills.

Given the sensitive nature of some of the topics the course will explore, we also expect everyone to engage group and class discussions with respect and the willingness to learn from others.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The session will entail tutor presentation and discussion.

Your tutor will be Jamila Thompson. Jamila is an LSE and Birkbeck graduate with degrees in BSc (Hons) Sociology and MA Culture, Diaspora, Ethnicity. Jamila is a qualified Secondary school teacher of Sociology and History and has extensive knowledge of the British education system from 10 years of working from primary to higher education in addition to having taught at a Supplementary School for African and Caribbean students.Jamila is passionate about issues of “race” and racism, identity and belonging, and education. She believes Black British History is a fundamental and necessary addition to the British Curriculum and writes for her own platform Melanated Thoughts UK as well as having written for platforms such as Black Minds Matter UK, Black Ballad and Make It Plain. Currently, Jamila is an MPhil/PhD student in the Department of Sociology as well as researcher for Black Learning and Mental Health and Race on the Agenda. Outside of education, activism and writing, Jamila is a keen reader, heavily into fitness, food (eating and cooking) and music.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No additional costs, but you may wish to bring pen and paper or a digitial equivalent for note taking.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Your tutor will share related courses with you, but please also explore our website sections on Histories, memories and heritage as well as British politics and society.
