What is the course about?

Questo Corso si concentra sulle varie fasi dell’Ottocento italiano che portarono alla nascita della nazione unita. Si concentrerà sui momenti chiave del processo risorgimentale e sui suoi protagonisti.

What will we cover?

Discuteremo di:

1) Perché un’Italia unita? Chi la volle?
2) I primi moti rivoluzionari
3) Le tre guerre di indipendenza
3) La spedizione dei Mille
4) Cause e conseguenze degli ideali risorgimentali.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Understand how a united Italy came into being
- Improve your vocabulary
- Participate in discussions about history.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is entirely in Italian and you should have studied the language for at least 4-5 years or have an higher intermediate/advanced level. If you have unsure, please contact Italian@citylit.ac.uk for advice.

The course will focus on content knowledge instead of language skills, which means that your level of Italian should be advanced but not necessarily native-like. The course will offer advanced language learners both an opportunity to develop their knowledge about a topic and a chance to expand their vocabulary related to it. For native language speakers, the course will allow them to delve into a topic of their interest and learn more about it.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

No, the tutor will provide any class-related materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Your tutor will be able to recommend other courses that may be of interest to you.

Roberto Minardi

Roberto moved to London in 1999. In 2002, he took a Diploma in Teaching Foreign Languages, and since then he has taught Italian in various colleges and universities. In 2005 he gained a CELTA qualification and moved to Central America for about a year. There he began teaching English, a job he carried on doing for various years on his return to England. Teaching English to speakers of other languages gave him the opportunity to work with students from diverse educational backgrounds, and allowed him to refine the technique of using the target language in class. Roberto strongly believes in helping students to build a positive attitude towards using Italian as much as possible, and to overcome the inhibition adults often experience, so that they can enjoy using the language. He went on to get a Joint BA in French Studies & Spanish and Latin American Studies. He has published several volumes of poetry in Italian. In addition to his interest in languages and literature, he has done extensive personal study in areas such as Italian Baroque, 19th and 20th century Italian art and history, and Italian dialects. Roberto enjoys sharing his studies and knowledge in class.
