What is the course about?

This workshop will shed light on Brazil's multifaceted involvement in World War II, exploring its contributions, challenges, and the lasting impact on the nation. Participants will embark on a historical journey, uncovering Brazil's pivotal role as the only South American country to send troops overseas, its strategic importance as a base for Allied operations in the Atlantic, and its critical role in securing vital supply routes.

What will we cover?

Through engaging discussions and an interactive session, attendees will gain a deeper understanding of Brazil's wartime experience.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Discuss the political dynamics, economic transformations, and societal changes faced in South America, with particular reference to Brazil
- Assess the cultural and social repercussions of Brazil's participation in the war, as well as its significance in shaping the country's post-war identity.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is an introductory course and no previous knowledge is required. A good standard of English and a willingness to engage in any classroom debates/discussions are the only requirements.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Through lecture/discussion/debate.

Maisa Edwards

Dr. Maísa Edwards holds a Joint International Relations PhD from King’s College London and the University of São Paulo. Her doctoral research focused on Brazil, the Zone of Peace and Cooperation of the South Atlantic and the South Atlantic region. She also has an MSc in Brazil in Global Perspective from King’s College London and a first degree in French and Spanish from University College London. Maísa also has a keen interest in multilingual and multicultural literature and has run the Talk Books With Me (@talk_books_with_me) project since February 2021.
