Her international career took off when she was recruited to sing and act the female lead in the musical King Kong. Under the shadow of apartheid this inter-racial collaboration was a groundbreaking enterprise that had reverberations for decades to follow, in South Africa and globally, including in London, where it was performed in 1961.
