What is the course about?

In this fully certified course you will learn about the practical application and theoretical aspects of the Art of Traditional Thai Massage, its origins in Buddhism, Yoga and the Ayurvedic tradition and its development and place in complementary therapy. You will gain the confidence and skill through classroom and independent guided study to treat using palmar, fist and thumb pressure, forearms, elbows, feet and knees and Yoga stretches to promote a mutual experience between client and therapist of deep relaxation, release, connection and presence.

What will we cover?

- The anatomy, physiological and subtle, of the body in application to Thai Yoga Massage
- Palpatory skills and the particular considerations for the therapist of personal development, including posture, self and client care particularly, when assisting clients in Yoga postures.
- A one and a half hour whole body routine incorporating supine, prone, side lying and seated, holding the client in a safe resourced space.
- Treatment Records and Case studies
- Contraindications, specific considerations for individual clients and differing abilities.
- Adapting the routine from mat to table.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Identify the ’Sen’ lines and associated anatomical structures & organs through palpation.
- Explore the subtle body of Yoga philosophy.
- Perform a 1.5 hour full body routine, safely with due consideration of client and self, on mat or table.
- Produce case studies demonstrating an understanding of individual care plans and client management.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is set at level 3, you must have successfully completed the “ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Massage” or equivalent within the last three years.

(equivalent being an Ofqual recognised qualifaction e.g. City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Massage - Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Massage - VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Massage).

- You will be required to move around a mat on the floor and apply pressure maintaining stability so a level of physical fitness is required to perform the routine.
- You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, handouts and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
- You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations.

Please look at the rest of the course outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support in your English and Maths skills to help you to take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Demonstration, tutor and peer review and feedback, pair work, handouts, practical workshop and case studies. Full participation is required.

There will up to 10hrs per week of independent study and treatment requirements outside of the classroom.

You will be given opportunities to treat clients within a clinic setting on Thursdays from 2pm - 7pm at the City Lit Welbeing Centre (your tutor will provide the details of how to access this.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All equipment and resources are provided, however, you will need a Notebook and Pen for your own notes.

It is essentail that you wear loose fitting clothing for practical exercises.

Diane Cooper

Didi’s training and Complementary Health journey followed a period of prolonged illness, becoming the key to her own recovery. She has over 15yrs clinical practice, including at Neal’s Yard Remedies, specialising in Somatic approaches to trauma, pain & dysfunction, to facilitate change and healing. She has a solid grounding in traditional manipulative techniques, such as Sports Massage, Deep Tissue & Thai Yoga, to the subtler practices of Aromatherapy, Reflexology, Bowen (NST) and Abdominal Sacral & Cranio Sacral work. A Yoga practice of 20yrs led her to train as an Integral Yoga Teacher. She teaches regular Mother & baby/toddler Yoga classes and trauma resolution Yoga classes. She loves to teach at a number of Adult learning centres in the community, addressing academic learning, physical & mental health for young people and adults, as she finds her students keep her learning up to date, deepening her understanding of Health & Wellbeing.
