What is the course about?

You will explore inventive combinations of media to draw from your own found imagery, photographs and sketches. Applying a range of techniques to different grounds, we will study the expressive qualities of surface, combined with a range of imagery, searching out ideas and themes that can promote visually stunning and personal work.

What will we cover?

You will explore inventive combinations of media to draw from your own found imagery, photographs and sketches. Applying a range of techniques to different grounds, we will study the expressive qualities of surface, combined with a range of imagery, searching out ideas and themes that can promote visually stunning and personal work. With reference to a variety of artists, we will explore a variety of creative methods and techniques to manipulate the materials. Mixed media is always surprising and unpredictable so makes for exciting work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- expand your creativity through experiments with mixed-media
- combine watercolour with other media to enhance your painting style
- explore visual elements (shape, colour etc) to develop a composition
- present a composition from your own source imagery.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for all levels.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Explanation and demonstration. Images of artists’ work where referenced as examples. Practical work. One-to-one discussion. Informal group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials included, but students are encouraged to bring their own paints and brushes if they have them. Advice on all materials will be given at the first session. There is a charge for the watercolour paper we use at cost price.

Ruth Brison

Ruth has taught drawing, painting and mixed media for more than 30 years, at many levels including Further, Higher and Adult Education, all over the country, including Manchester, Birmingham and London. She studied Fine Art at Liverpool and Birmingham Universities and has exhibited diversely, including the Royal Academy in London. As an artist and educator she has an eclectic mix of skills and interests. Drawing is pivotal. Mixed media has become a central focus over the years and her practice has developed towards the interface between Fine Art and Textiles where elements of painting, relief and experimental textiles meet. Coming from a background of accomplished artists and educators’ she has spent many years developing values in educational practice and enabling students to access their own creative potential.
