What is the course about?

Working directly from a variety of still life objects in studio set-ups, you will be introduced to a diversity of techniques and approaches particular to the versatile medium of watercolour. You will develop your skills in observation and use of colour mixing, to produce watercolour compositions both small and large-scale.

What will we cover?

• Basic wash and masking-out techniques.
• How to structure a composition in a range of scales.
• Layering and mixing colour to interpret form, pattern, and spatial relationships.
• An introduction to the work of still life artists working in the medium of watercolour.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Utilise a range of mark-making and brush techniques.
• Layer and mix colour when working from observation.
• Develop compositions when working from a still-life subject.
• Recognise and discuss watercolour methods of artist working within the still life genre.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners or as a refresher course for students who have some experience in watercolour painting.

You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs and for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

• Studio-based practical tasks.
• Tutor demonstrations
• One to one guidance
• Group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Basic materials and resources are provided as part of this course, including watercolour paint, brushes and paper appropriate for the medium. Students are welcome to bring any additional specialist materials such as their own brushes. Advice on materials can be given as the course progresses.
