What is the course about?

Making a series of studies using a range of painting approaches, you will respond to the theme of landscape and a sense of place. You will work directly on location and in the studio environment to become more confident in making choices for developing your own compositions.

What will we cover?

Using a range of painting media - water and oil-based paint, you will explore the landscape elements of light, space and mass. Making observed studies directly in the outdoor environment, and taking inspiration from your own painted studies and photographs, you will be supported to develop your own painted compositions. The work of relevant historical and contemporary artists will introduce potential approaches to use within your own landscape painting.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Use a range of approaches to develop imagery for landscape painting.
• Respond to a place (site) by exploring compositional choices and colour work.
• Use a variety of scales, and different surfaces.
• Recognise the approaches and painting methods of artists working with landscape.
• Make more informed choices of materials and methods of application in developing your work.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course is suitable for students with some basic painting skills and those more experienced that want to develop their painting in the area of landscape. Experience of drawing from observation and a basic understanding of colour mixing would be useful.
