What is the course about?

The aim of this course is to give students the opportunity to practise using Welsh in a wider range of contexts and for a wider range of purposes; to expand their grammatical and communicative abilities in the language; and to promote interest in and awareness of the language and its culture today.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We aim to cover units 1-12 of Cwrs Sylfaen. Topics will include expressing opinions, organising events, travel, family and talking about future plans.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- confidently produce sentences in the present, past and future
- use the conditional mood, i.e. talk about what you and others 'would do'
- express and ask for personal opinions
- talk about where you were born and brought up (using passive constructions)
- talk about wishes, future plans and ambitions.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have completed Welsh Beginners, Module 3 or have equivalent experience (i.e. have studied Welsh for approximately 1 year). You should be familiar with the basic word order of Welsh and know how to give and ask for simple personal information about the "here and now".

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The coursebook Dysgu Cymraeg: Sylfaen (A2)- De Cymru/South Wales (Y Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol/National Centre for Learning Welsh) will be used. It costs approximately £10 or can be downloaded as a PDF for free from https://dysgucymraeg.cymru/dysgu/cwricwlwm-a-chwrslyfrau/

A North Walian edition is available; however, southern Welsh will be taught in the class.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Welsh 2 lower: module 2. Please enrol as soon as possible.

Jack Pulman-Slater Tutor Website

Shwmae! Jack dw i! I first joined City Lit in 2017-2019 and it's great to be back teaching Cymraeg and Svenska both in person at City Lit and online. I was brought up in north Pembrokeshire and was fortuntate enough to attend Welsh- and bilingual- medium schools where I acquired Welsh. The Welsh language has given me lots of opportunities and it's brilliant to be able to welcome new people into the language as a tutor. Welsh is a vibrant, living and thriving language, not just in Wales but also here at City Lit. Hej! Jag heter Jack! I love learning languages and started learning Swedish with City Lit a few years ago and I became obsessed by this fasincating Germanic language. This was a journey that recently led me to take my C1 exam at Folkuniversitetet Göteborg. Learning and speaking Swedish has given me access to a entirely new country, culture and perpsective. Learning one Scandinvian language is also a gateway to the others— it's "learn 1, get 3!".
