What is the course about?
This course is at Canolradd (B1) level and is intended for learners who have actively studied Welsh for 2 years. You will continue to develop your understanding of Welsh grammar and improve the 4 key skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing).
This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.
What will we cover?
We will cover units 1-10 of Cwrs Canolradd. Topics will include giving advice, descriptions, directions and using persuasive language.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- make a complaint
- give advice
- accept and refuse an invitation
- give directions
- use conjugated prepositions (ynddo, wrthi, ohonoch, etc.)
- use a variety of question tags (...o’nd oedd e?, ...on’d yw hi?, ...nag wyt ti?, etc.).
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have completed courses at Sylfaen level or have equivalent experience (i.e. have studied for approximately 2 years). You should be confident with the basic word order of Welsh and know how to form sentences in the present, past and future. This course is at CEFR Level B1. For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart at the start of the languages section of our course guide, or at http://www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/Languages/74. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work,
group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including
presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

The coursebook Dysgu Cymraeg: Canolradd (B1)- De Cymru/South Wales (Y Ganolfan Dysgu Cymraeg Genedlaethol/National Centre for Learning Welsh) (1999686179) will be used. It costs approximately £10 or can be downloaded as a PDF for free from https://dysgucymraeg.cymru/dysgu/cwricwlwm-a-chwrslyfrau/
A North Walian edition is available; however, southern Welsh will be taught in the class.

I love learning languages and started learning Swedish with City Lit a few years ago and I became obsessed by this fasincating Germanic language. This was a journey that recently led me to take my C1 exam at Folkuniversitetet Göteborg. Learning and speaking Swedish has given me access to a entirely new country, culture and perpsective. Learning one Scandinvian language is also a gateway to the others— it's "learn 1, get 3!".
