What is the course about?
Have you been actively studying Welsh for 3/4 years and want to move beyond coursebook orientated sessions? This communicative-focussed class draws on a variety of authentic texts and videos to foster interesting conversations in Welsh. You'll practise giving and asking for opinions on contemporary issues from Wales and beyond. There will be a focus on building up more advanced vocabulary and on using increasingly complex sentences.
Each session will contain a grammatical focus (supported by homework tasks completed on a weekly basis), but the focus will be on speaking and actively using Welsh.
What will we cover?
- dialects and varieties of Welsh
- Welsh myths and legends
- famous Welsh people and their contributions to Wales
- Wales and the world
- Papurau bro and local news.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- recognise features of Northern and Southern Welsh dialects
- use increasingly complex sentences
- respond to a variety of authentic texts in Welsh
- negotiate situations in which you don't fully understand without switching to English
- recognise key differences between formal wirtten and spoken Welsh.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Students should have actively studied Welsh for 3/4 years.
You should know the basic word orders of Welsh and know how to form sentences in the present, past and future. You should be able to accurately answer “yes” and “no” (using the different forms of the verb ‘to be’).
This course is at CEFR Level B2.
Choose a level 4 course if you can:
- understand authentic, long passages of some complexity (e.g., interviews, adverts, news broadcasts, etc),
- participate in authentic conversation with native speakers using a good range of generally accurate language, argue a viewpoint convincingly,
- understand authentic texts with ease (e.g., articles from the press, literary extracts, etc).
For further details of the specific language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g using money, telling the time, etc).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course is based on the communicative approach:
- active students’ interaction
- emphasis on speaking and listening skills
- pair and group work
- role plays
- use of realia, pictures and authentic material
- use of audio-visual techniques when appropriate
Please note, students are expected to participate in oral classroom activities and to do some homework as and when required.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
This course is based on the tutor's own material. It also makes use of authentic texts (short and long form news and magazine articles), copies of which will be provided via Google Classroom.
Your tutor will also recommend accompanying homework exercises (digital copies of which will be provided via Google Classroom).
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Welsh 4, module 2 in Term 2.
