What is the course about?

This 6 session course is for beginners and is divided into 2 parts.

In Part 1, you'll continue learning how to pronounce the sounds of the Welsh and practise interacting in simple, situated conversations.

In Part 2, you'll focus on reading basic passages in simple Welsh in guided reading sessions.

What will we cover?

- exchanging basic personal information
- talking about events in the past tense
- the sounds of Welsh
- reading basic passages on simple topics.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- hold a basic factual exchange in Welsh with a stranger (giving your name, where you're from, where you live)
- talk about simple events in the past tense
- be able to read basic passages of simple Welsh
- be able to confidently pronounce unfamiliar words.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is for beginners and follows on from our Term 2 course for absolute beginners: "Welsh beginners: reading and speaking" with Wyn Griffiths.

Students who have not studied in Term 2 are welcome to join. This course is suitable if you have actively studied Welsh in a classroom setting for at least 6 hours or have equivalent experience. You should be able to introduce yourself and exchange basic information with a fellow speaker about where you live and what you like. You should also be able to read very simple dialogue-based texts on the same topics.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material. All material will be available on Google Classroom to support your learning outside of class.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Based on tutor's own material.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

City Lit offers a range of in-person and online Welsh classes, workshops and reading groups. Ask you tutor for more information.
