What is the course about?

Like other Celtic languages, the words for "yes" and "no" in Welsh vary depending on the question being asked. In this live online workshop we'll explain in simple and accessible terms how the call-and-response style approach to answering questions works in Welsh.

This workshop also serves as a useful revision session of the verb BOD ("to be") in all its forms covered at beginner and Level 2 courses in Welsh at City Lit.

What will we cover?

This workshop covers the YES/NO style questions introduced throughout our Beginner and Level 2 courses at City Lit (i.e. up to CEFL A2). We will look at:

- YES/NO responses which use the verb BOD (ydw, o'n, bydda, baswn)
- How to reply to questions which start with main verbs (gest…? Est…?)
- Exceptions to the rules
- Differences between north and south Walian uses of YES/NO words.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- understand the grammatical rules controlling the use of different YES/NO responses in Welsh
- confidently identify and correct errors in YES/NO responses covered on Beginner and Level 2 classes
- more confidently conjugate the verb BOD in the 1st person (ydw, dw, oeddwn, baswn, etc).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Learners on this workshop should be currently studying on a Beginners or Level 2(lower/upper) Welsh course at City Lit or have equivalent experience.

The workshop is also suitable for more experienced learners who need further support and practise on answering YES/NO questions in Welsh. If you are unsure whether this course is suitable for you, please contact languages@citylit.ac.uk for further guidance.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

- bitesize mini-lectures
- visual representations and aids
- small group work
- quizzes.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Based on tutor's own material.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue learning Welsh with City Lit. We offer a range of Welsh classes, reading groups and workshops at all levels both in-person in Covent Garden and online.
