What is the course about?
The course provides guided and structured pronunciation practice for learners of Welsh, focussing particularly on the vowel system of the language.
What will we cover?
Vowels: single vowel sounds (monophtongs) and moving vowels (diphthongs)
Word stress (and how vowels change their pronunciation in stressed syllables)
We’ll also cover the most common pronunciation mistakes for Welsh learners (whose first language is English) including a focus on the so-called "double letters" (ch, ll, rh).
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Understand how Welsh spelling relates to pronunciation and vice versa.
- Be able to produce previously difficult sounds with increased confidence and accuracy.
- Understand how a mispronunciation comes about and what you need to do to produce a sound intelligibly.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This course is for learners who are currently actively studying and those looking to improve their pronunciation accuracy and intelligibility. This course isn't suitable for absolute beginners- you should have encountered Welsh before in either a classroom or real world setting and have some insight into your own pronunciation difficulties.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course uses guided pronunciation practice. This means that instead of simply listening and repeating, you’ll be given pointers on how to physically produce unfamiliar sounds both in isolation and in context. Visual prompts will be used to help guide you in producing different sounds and intonation patterns.
After the workshop you will be given permanent access to a bank of online resources and recordings to allow you to continue working on your pronunciation.
You can also choose to complete a follow-up homework activity in which you record yourself speaking and are given personalised feedback.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Based on tutor's own materials.
Students will be given access to resources and materials after the class.
You will need a pair of headphones and a quiet environment in which to join the class online from.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
