Learn to play 'filmi' songs from Bollywood movies that incorporate Indian traditional raga, bhangra rhythms and elements of contemporary pop. For all instrumentalists and singers,including improvisers, at intermediate and advanced level. Learning will be in the aural tradition, though music will be provided.

What is the course about?

Bollywood bands play in India for all occasions, particularly as street bands for weddings. This introduction to the genre will recreate some of the repertoire using your instruments.

What will we cover?

This is an opportunity to play Bhangra and Bollywood tunes. Explore the use of classical Indian influences - raga and Dhol drum rhythms - within Bollywood film song. Equally the world-wide ingredients will be studied.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

Increase your understanding and appreciation of the musical world of Bollywood film.
Enjoy practical experience of playing music from this specific origin.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for competent and advanced players, including rhythm section, and singers. Good reading is required of melody players. Improvisational skills welcome. Advance notice of instruments in keys other than C, Bb, Eb will be appreciated. Places for pianists are at a limit of 2 so please check with the music department prior to enrolment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Listening to sample music, originals, tutor demonstration and practical rehearsal session. The music for study - by ear and from notation - will be approached in theoretical and practical ways. There will be opportunities for transcription work outside of class.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring your instrument. Percussion and sheet music/recordings will be supplied. You may find it useful to record parts of the sessions.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You may be interested in other non-Western music courses such as Afro centric drumming, Latin piano, Brazilian ensemble.

Sarha Moore

Sarha is an experienced teacher and gigging musician, performing on the saxophone, arranging and composing on the piano, in classical, jazz and world music genres. Her principal band, Bollywood Brass Band, is the UK’s pioneering Indian-style wedding band, performing tunes and compulsively danceable rhythms of Bollywood films. Twice nominated for Songlines World Music Awards, the band has performed across the world in concerts, festivals, and Indian weddings in the UK, Europe, India, Thailand and South Africa. Sarha played with Ghanaian Highlife band Orchestre Jazira, and socialist big band, The Happy End. She also plays in the Charlie Mingus jazz cover band Hog Callin’, The Great Yiddish Parade marching band and Freylekh klezmer band. Sarha’s specialist area is World Music, and she has a PhD on the study of the Flattened Supertonic across different cultures. At CityLit she teaches jazz and classical piano, saxophone, world music styles (practical and academic courses), musicianship and music theory.
