What is the course about?

The course explores some of the fundamental movement patterns involved in walking to enable the student to recognise their own habits and begin to find better balance and an easier, more efficient gait.

What will we cover?

We will look at different aspects of how we use our whole selves and the ground to find stability on one leg and make an easy transition to being stable on the other leg.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Recognise your own movement patterns better
- Identify some new processes which improve stability and reduce unnecessary effort
- Practise a series of small movements leading to increased efficiency and stability in walking.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Everyone is welcome, although you should be able to get down to lie on the floor and get up again unaided. If you have a disability please contact the office in advance.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course is practical, experiential and verbally led. The tutor will guide you through a series of slow, small movements, asking you to pay attention to your sensations. The movements are explored by the student at their own pace. Many of the exercises are done lying on the floor and then taken into upright movement immediately afterwards. There could be some partner observation exercises.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Please wear comfortable, loose clothing. The classes are not strenuous so you need to be sure you will be warm enough.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

There are usually 3 or 4 other Feldenkrais courses at City Lit during the year. The Method can be used to improve comfort in many daily activities and also in dance, drama, sport and martial arts.
