What is the course about?

You will explore inventive combinations of media to draw from your own found imagery, photographs and sketches. Applying a range of techniques to different grounds, we will study the expressive qualities of surface, combined with a range of imagery, searching out ideas and themes that can promote visually stunning and personal work.

What will we cover?

You will explore inventive combinations of media to draw from your own found imagery, photographs and sketches. Applying a range of techniques to different grounds, we will study the expressive qualities of surface, combined with a range of imagery, searching out ideas and themes that can promote visually stunning and personal work. With reference to a variety of artists, we will explore a variety of creative methods and techniques to manipulate the materials. Mixed media is always surprising and unpredictable so makes for exciting work.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- expand your creativity through experiments with mixed-media
- combine watercolour with other media to enhance your painting style
- explore visual elements (shape, colour etc) to develop a composition
- present a composition from your own source imagery.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Suitable for all levels.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Explanation and demonstration. Images of artists’ work where referenced as examples. Practical work. One-to-one discussion. Informal group discussion.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

All basic materials included, but students are encouraged to bring their own paints and brushes if they have them. Advice on all materials will be given at the first session. There is a charge for the watercolour paper we use at cost price.

Jack Duplock Tutor Website

Jack Duplock After receiving a postgraduate diploma in painting from Royal Academy School of Art. Jack has taught at various institutions including UCA, teaching learners from diverse backgrounds and ages on subjects such as observational drawing, painting and research methods. Over the past 20 years, alongside his teaching, Jack has built an established art practice exhibiting both in the UK and internationally, including at the Agency Gallery London, Durden and Ray Los Angeles and Kunstlaboratorium Vestfossen, Norway. His work has been included in New Contemporaries and John Moore painting prize. His work is in various private collections. Jack works primarily using watercolour, acrylic paint, pencil and pen and ink. Using photographs, both personal and found imagery. A recent body of work explored abstraction, figure and landscape inspired by the strange light and visceral folk history experienced during a residency in North Iceland. In his teaching, Jack delights in helping students follow their curiosity to develop new skills and perspectives in drawing and painting.
