Emma Iliffe, British Sign Language tutor at City Lit, has won the tutor award at the Festival of Learning Awards 2023 for her commitment to engaging BSL teaching and promoting Deaf culture.
Emma Iliffe’s passion for Deaf culture and the Deaf community forms an integral part of her practice as a teacher of British Sign Language (BSL) at City Lit. Having been denied access to signed education as a child, she is now motivated by her desire to support hearing students in learning and developing their own language skills.
As a tutor, Emma takes particularly care in providing the necessary resources and encouragement for learners to mix within the Deaf community. Last year, she took some of her learners to the BSL rally to experience first-hand the Deaf community coming together: she is passionate about breaking down barriers and strengthening bonds.
Emma was awarded the Tutor Award, sponsored by the Education and Training Foundation, with judges commending Emma’s dedication to making a difference through her teaching practice.
Organised by Learning and Work Institute, Festival of Learning is an annual campaign which aims both to celebrate the power of learning to transform lives, and to encourage more adults to take part.
