Tell us a bit more about yourself.

My name is Laura, and I'm a Student Centre and Library assistant here at City Lit. Part of my role is to ensure that any queries from students that come in are answered. That could be referring them to a department or getting them help with things like bursaries or travel fees, as well as course applications. The library part of my role is essentially to catalogue and care for anything that is in the library. So that could be books, music scores, CDs, DVDs. I also help with afterhours clubs. We've got a creative writing group, where people can bring in their own work and read to a group, like an open mic event.

Tell us a bit more about your team.

I am part of the Student Experiences team at City Lit and that includes the Student Centre and Library but also enrolments and information and guidance. I am also working closely with other teams like the learning support team for example.

What do you enjoy most about working at City Lit?

What I enjoy most about City Lit is the people, and you never have the same day twice. We've got people from different backgrounds, different experiences, different abilities, and it's a really great place where everyone can come together.

What did you do prior to working at City Lit?

Prior to working at City Lit, I was finishing my Masters in Library and Information Studies at University College London. I had specialised in library services for students with dyslexia and was eager to share what I had learned with others. I had worked in public libraries before and City Lit has been my first opportunity to work within an academic library. Both the history and the rich culture of City Lit’s work with people with disabilities, whether that's people who are deaf or people that have additional learning needs, was really inspiring and seemed the perfect place for where I wanted to work and to offer the skills that I had learned.

What’s your advice to new members of staff?

The advice I would give to new starters is just be yourself. Show what you're passionate about because that really shines through in people and so that will help you to fit right in.

What are your favourite perks of working at City Lit?

One of the great benefits of working at City Lit is that you can sign up to heavily discounted courses. I am going to do a level three first aid training at work course. Another great benefit is our central location, we’re in the heart of Covent Garden close to lots of cultural attractions, shops, and restaurants.
