City Lit caught up with Nina Dellow, one of the students on the Foundation Diploma in Art & Design course this year. She and her fellow students head to ‘Downstairs at the Department Zone’ in Brixton on Wednesday 19th June, to kick off their end-of-year exhibition.
In this Q&A, we find out more about her how she started the course, what she enjoyed about it and what she will be exhibiting.
Why did you decide to join the Foundation Diploma Art & Design course?
I’d previously taken the Pre-Foundation Course at City Lit, which really confirmed that Foundation was for me. I knew that at some point in my life, I would eventually give in to the creative part of me that for so long I’d not really nurtured. So, I suppose the question was, “if not now, when?” I’m just so glad that I made that decision.
Can you tell us a bit more about your time at City Lit?
I have found it to be a really supportive learning environment and I’ve made some lovely friends. The chance to try lots of different disciplines before specialising, opened up new ways of working and was a lot of fun. The opportunity to share ideas and be experimental with my work, has been invaluable and has given me the confidence to take the next step and begin my own practice.
How did City Lit help achieve your goals/ambitions/dreams?
The combination of studio work, core group sessions and independent study, gave me both the structure and space that I needed. The course confirmed for me how a creatively focused life could be feasible and to appreciate that you get out, what you put in. It feels like the start of something exciting and I’ve got the staff and my peers at City Lit to thank for that.
Tell us a bit more about your work and the upcoming show.
I will be showing a short film within an installation, inspired by a found archive that belonged to a 1960’s ice skater. I like to work in a multidisciplinary way, so my work involves moving image, sound, performance and photography. As a group we are really looking forward to the show, it’ll be great to celebrate what we have all achieved this year. There is such a huge variety of work going on display and to see it all come together is fantastic.
What did you enjoy most about the course?
I have enjoyed the freedom to take risks and make the kind of work that I want to make.
Any tips for anyone interested in joining the Foundation Diploma Art & Design course?
Just do it.
