What is the course about?

This course provides an opportunity to deepen and expand your acting skills by working scenes to performance standard. The focus will be on rehearsing in depth, which will provide the opportunity to identify and cultivate your individual strengths and improve your weaknesses. You will be able to build confidence and challenge yourself during the preparation process and gain invaluable experience in sharing your work with an invited audience.

What will we cover?

• Practical text analysis
• Character work and development
• Exploratory improvisations
• Detailed scene rehearsal
•Performance to an invited audience at the end of term.

Please note that acting classes by their very nature can involve exercises and the exploration of material that some students may find challenging.

By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Effectively explore and analyse text
• Apply this textual analysis in practical work
• Build and sustain a given character
• Rehearse with rigour and depth
• Perform a scene/(s) with confidence.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is suitable for students who have completed a range of our acting courses or who have gained suitable experience elsewhere.

In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Listen and respond to instructions and feedback.
• Communicate clearly in discussion and drama practice.
• Read and respond to a variety of text.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Take notes.
• Work within groups and pairs safely.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Your tutor will teach though a variety of techniques during this course.This may include work in pairs, small groups, individually and in whole group.

As part of the course content, your tutor may record your image for initial and ongoing assessment purposes. You are entitled to decline to participate in the recording of your image.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

• You will need a notebook, pencil and eraser.
• Comfortable clothing should be worn.
• You may be required to purchase a copy of the play that you are working from. Photocopies of individual scenes will be provided.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Continue on to another scene work class to build your knowledge of plays and to hone your skills. Audition for DRC101 Acting Diploma or DRC002/003 Foundation course for more formal training.

Sean Croft Tutor Website

Sean trained at École Internationale de Théâtre Jacques Lecoq, a world renowned school for physical theatre. Over the two years he trained in devised theatre, ensemble building, character development, mask work, mime, object manipulation / puppetry and clowning, among a vast array of other training. Sean also trained at East 15 Acting School on the BA Hons / Acting & Stage Combat degree graduating in 2011, gaining specialist skills in nine different weapon sets alongside an extensive acting program, in contemporary and classical work and practitioners. Sean works as a performer, director and choreographer, and regularly leads workshops and courses for theatre companies across the UK, Europe and Asia. His approach to theatre follows predominantly from his training at Lecoq, with the body and with a playful curiosity, exploring the space and how the body moves within it. In his courses he hopes to open up a deeper understanding of performance technique, emotional engagement, physicality and the exploration of all aspects of life through theatre and to share his deep profound love of what he does with others.
