What is the course about?

The course aims to introduce you to the basic grammatical structures of vocabulary of Ancient Greek. Details of the resources used in this course can be found on this page.

What will we cover?

We will begin by becoming familiar with reading and writing the Greek script. We will begin the conjugation of verbs, the declension of nouns and adjectives, and articles. More details will be provided by the tutor during the course.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

  • read and write the Greek alphabet, including diacritics such as accents and breathings
  • demonstrate some knowledge of definite article
  • demonstrate some knowledge of present tense
  • identify and understand simple word order and sentence structure

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for complete beginners, although those who have some previous knowledge of Greek may wish to join for revision purposes. As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
If you have never studied grammar before, you may benefit from attending one of the short courses titled “Grammar for ancient languages: an introduction”.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of grammar instructions, grammar exercises and translation with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly, check the material uploaded on Google Classroom and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 1-2 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring writing material. Details of the resources used in this course and the starting point can be found on this page.

We recommend you purchase the book after the first session of the course, after you’ve had confirmation that the class is suitable for you.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?
