What is the course about?

The course aims to introduce you to the basic grammatical structures of vocabulary of Ancient Greek. We shall be using Reading Greek, a textbook designed for adult learners based on original Greek sources.

What will we cover?

We will begin by becoming familiar with reading and writing the Greek script. We will study the conjugation of verbs, the declension of nouns and adjectives, and articles.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read and write words in the Greek alphabet
- demonstrate some knowledge of definite article
- identify some forms of the declension of adjectives
- demonstrate some knowledge of present tense (indicative, imperative).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a course for complete beginners although those who have some previous knowledge of Greek may wish to join for revision purposes. As the course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.
If you have never studied grammar before, you may benefit from attending one of the short courses titled “Grammar for ancient languages: an introduction”.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly, check the material saved on Google Classroom and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 1-2 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Bring writing material. Textbook: Greek to GCSE: Part 1(/i) by John Taylor, Bloomsbury (2016), ISBN 9781474255165. An e-book version can also be purchased.
We recommend you purchase the book after the first session of the course, after you’ve had confirmation that the class is suitable for you.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Ancient Greek 1 module 2.
