The course aims to give students basic knowledge of Portuguese as spoken in Brazil, enabling them to understand how the language works and to start communicating in various situations. The focus will be on Brazilian Portuguese, but we’ll also look at other forms of the language as spoken in the Portuguese-speaking world, especially Portugal. This course, together with module 2 and module 3 covers year one and two (Brazilian Portuguese beginners and Brazilian Portuguese 2 lower). Expect more homework than in other courses.
What will we cover?
Brazilian Portuguese grammar, colloquial and formal language, idiomatic expressions. The students will have the opportunity to develop their oral, listening comprehension, reading and writing skills. Other forms of Portuguese will also be covered, especially Portuguese from Portugal.

Sajan is a writer, interpreter and teacher with many years of experience in Lusophone studies. After completing a BA in Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Bristol, he was awarded the Michael Loewe Scholarship to read an MPhil in Latin American Studies at Cambridge. Here, he developed a specialism in postcolonial Brazilian history and culture, with a focus on Afro-Brazilian religion and music. He is an experienced teacher and translator of Spanish and Portuguese, and believes in a communication-led to language pedagogy. He hopes to encourage students to connect with old and new passions in the pursuit of building confidence and expression in language. He aims to share his great enthusiasm for Portuguese and Brazilian culture and assist students of all backgrounds and abilities. Outside of the classroom, Sajan likes to supplement his language learning with a keen interest in music and literature. In his opinion, one of the most rewarding aspects of acquiring a new language is the ability to connect with new avenues of culture, from cooking to sport; music to cinema. He aims to transmit this philosophy to students as they pursue their different goals.
