Description

What is the course about?

Armed with a thorough grounding in bidding at the one and two levels, we now turn to defence. Improve your
declarer and defensive card play using signals, discards and protective bidding.

What will we cover?

We begin with a revision of what we know already and augment our slam bidding with the use of cue bids. We will
then move on to look at 2nd and 3rd hand play. Protective bidding and, if time permits, the wider uses of doubles will
also be covered.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

• Consolidate your knowledge and use of weak twos and two club opening bids
• Recognise a protective bid and know how to respond both as partner and opposition
• Know what is meant by a cue bid and how it complements Blackwood
• Improve your defensive card play using signals and discards.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course follows on from Bridge 2: module 1 and is suitable for bridge players who have attended the equivalent of
80 hours tuition and/or are confident in their bidding at the one and two level. It is not essential that you are familiar
with weak twos as these will be revisited at the beginning of the course. If you wish to speak to the tutor before
deciding to enrol, please contact the Humanities Department.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Teaching methods include prepared hands to play; Q & A; quizzes and recapitulation. All handouts will be provided
including worksheets for optional homework practice.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There are no additional costs other than note-taking materials.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

The follow-on course, Bridge 2: module 3 - more defensive bidding, starts in April 2020.
