What is the course about?
This is an 8-week hands-on ceramics class, welcoming learners interested in exploring a wide variety of pottery making and decorating techniques. The course is unstructured with students pursuing self-directed projects with guidance, encouragement and support from the Tutor. Some previous experience is advised. Learning through making and following practical demonstrations, you will develop new and improved making skills, working with an increased awareness of studio ceramics and a better understanding of pottery techniques.
What will we cover?
Learners will experience a wide range of making and decorating techniques, becoming familiar with the variety of processes that are involved in making ceramics. With regular demonstrations, you will gain confidence, skills and knowledge to be able to work more independently and supported in developing your own projects.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
The course is aimed at those with previous experience of working with clay, having enthusiasm and interest to develop their ceramic practices.
You should be able to follow simple written and verbal instructions, demonstrations, hand-outs and health and safety information. You should be able to use numbers and be able to do simple measurements and calculations. Self-reflection is an important part of art education and practice, you will be encouraged to evaluate and review your own learning, ways of working and progress and be invited into group discussions.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
Group and individual demonstrations supported by discussions and visual references, but mainly learning by doing. Working at home with visual ideas is optional.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own. Your tutor will advise you which tools to purchase. There is a charge of £2.75 per 500g for clay before firing, the porcelain charge is £24.00 per bag/ £12.00 per half bag. Ensure that you bring with you a suitable pair of closed shoes, e.g. not open toed sandals. You will be expected to show good workshop practice and follow health and safety guidelines.
