What is the course about?
To ‘fine tune’ your articulation of ‘problematic’ vowel and consonant sounds still closer to Standard English. You will improve your ability to communicate fluently and expressively in spoken English. A high level of commitment is essential. This course will be delivered in the college this term.
What will we cover?
Prepared readings and presentations and improvised conversations. Any elements of Standard English/RP covered in Stages 1 and 2 which need revision will be dealt with as they arise. Revision of ‘challenging’ vowel and consonant sounds.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
Interact fluently and confidently with native English speakers.
Demonstrate intention and attitude effectively and expressively through the use of appropriate Intonation patterns.
Demonstrate fluency through the correct application of the Weak form of grammatical words.
Articulate your ‘challenging’ sounds – both Vowels and Consonants – with accuracy.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should be able to communicate fluently and freely in English, should probably have completed Stages 1
and 2 at City Lit and be able to use an English pronunciation (phonetic) dictionary effectively.
In order to get the most from the course you will be able to:
• Speak English fluently.
• Communicate in group situations.
• Give and receive constructive feedback.
• Read and respond to a range of texts.
• Take course notes for your own use.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
This course will be taught at the college this term.
. Individual presentations of prepared literary items and improvised conversations is followed immediately by oral feedback. The articulation process of any sound (vowel or consonant) selected for revision is practised through specific sounds. (Group, pair and individual work). Short transcription tests may be set to facilitate your application of the phonetic symbols and your ‘spelling-to-sound’ progress.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
You will use your course notes/hand-outs from Stages 1 and 2. Additional material will be supplied by the tutor.
Please have a small hand-mirror; a pen/pencil and note-book/sheets of A4 paper.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
You can attend ‘Improve your Speaking Voice’; 'Storytelling for Business and Pleasure' and continue to revisit this course in future terms in order to practise and develop your improved pronunciation skills, and to acquire still greater fluency in English.

David Gwillim graduated in 2002 from the Central School of Speech and Drama with an MA in Voice Studies. Before this he had been a successful actor for thirty years in television, films and theatre, working for the BBC and ITV, in Hollywood and the West End, and for the Royal Sharkespeare Company. After graduation he taught at RADA, ALRA and other London drama schools. In 2006 he began teaching at City Lit, where he now specialises in English pronunciation for speakers of foreign languages. He has the Certificate for Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector.
