What is the course about?

As well as examining the techniques of historical and contemporary experimental animators, including Norman McLaren, Jan Svankmajer, William Kentridge, Caroline Leaf, Len Lye and Paul Bush, you will be invited to explore a range of processes and materials to develop your aesthetic and convey your personal vision. You will learn how to capture animation using a DSLR camera and the professional application Dragon Frame and edit your film using different effects and processes to creatively combine clips in Adobe Premiere Pro CC.

What will we cover?

- The aesthetics and conceptual framework of experimental animation.
- The work of internationally renowned experimental animators
- Experimental stop motion animation using an innovative approach to drawing, assemblage, pixilation, 3D forms and found images.
- Setting up and capturing animation using Dragon Frame and a DSLR camera
- Creative editing and compositing using Premiere Pro CC
- Exporting sequences to appropriate formats for online and gallery exhibition.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Identify the techniques used by a range of internationally renowned artists
- Use a range of materials and techniques to create animated sequences
- Use a DSLR camera with Dragon Frame to capture stop motion
- Creatively edit your clips using Adobe Premiere Pro CC
- Export your sequence using an appropriate format and codec.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This is a beginners course to the subject of experimental animation but you are expected to be engaged in or aware of fine art practice. You are also expected to have basic experience in using a computer including navigating files, opening applications and opening and saving files.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

You will be taught using a range of techniques including workshops, short lectures, demonstrations, practical exercises, tutorials, group and individual assistance and hand-outs. Please note the City Lit uses Apple Mac computers in Film and Animation.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The latest professional equipment and software are available for your use throughout the course in our fully equipped studios. It would be useful to bring a memory stick or portable hard drive – please note PC formatted hard drives can be read by Apple mac computers, but not written to.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

You can develop your practice further by gaining guided help on your own personal project in the course Stop Motion Animation: Personal project. You can also develop your experimental moving image work through City Lit courses in Experimental Film Making, Editing, After Effects CC and Animate. You can develop your fine art practice further through courses in experimental drawing, painting and in the longer City Lit fine art course and the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design.

Stephanie Griffiths

Stephanie Griffiths is a BAFTA award winning animator with over 20 years professional experience working on numerous well known children’s animated programmes. As well as a string of credits in broadcast model and drawn animation, Stephanie has produced experimental films creatively combining animation and live action. She is also an accomplished puppet maker and puppeteer. Teaching and mentoring has been an integral part of Stephanie’s practice and she has facilitated and mentored a wide range of innovative animation and art projects working with different communities and international artists.
