What is the course about?
Begin your journey into art and art-making - try your hand at drawing, painting and other techniques, discover how to respond to the world around you, be inspired by other artists’ work, tap into your own imagination and bring your own ideas to life.
What will we cover?
- How to start drawing and painting
- How to work with subjects and themes to trigger new ideas and creative thinking
- How to look at art then record and make your own responses
- How to develop your creativity further
Materials and processes include:
Collage, mixed media, mark making in pastel, pencil, paint, photography, monoprint, stencilling and texture.
Contextual exploration of other artists’ techniques.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Employ a broad range of 2D creative techniques in a variety of media
- Record and develop your own creative ideas
- Identify ways in which to take your creativity further.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
Beginners – no prior experience required. Come with an open mind and a willingness to try new techniques.

All basic materials are provided.
When I've finished, what course can I do next?
Any of our art and design courses that are aimed at beginners would be good follow on courses. Advice will be given at the end of the course by your tutor.
Ro Sylvester is a veteran of film and theatre, having made costume and props for productions such as ‘Hellraiser’ and ‘Legend’ back in the ‘80s. She ran a costume studio in Covent Garden for some time, supplying the Opera House and other West End Theatres with costumes and props. Ro also made many props and costumes for pop videos including Eddie Grant, Supertramp and New Order. From the early ‘90s, she worked in secondary and 6th form teaching, delivering exam courses in Design Technology, Textiles, Graphics, Computer Graphics and Model Making. Having retired from teaching three years ago, Ro has worked to private commission in retail display, commercials and theatre. She has also worked as a tutor at City Lit, teaching; Model Making, Prop Making, Perspective, Pastel drawing and general creativity skills. This year she is making props for Xmas displays for stores in New York, Bordeaux and London. Ro runs a lively and fast moving classroom, helping students to explore their potential and progress onto other courses where applicable.
