What is the course about?

To develop students' competence in speaking and in understanding spoken and written German at an intermediate level. To enrich vocabulary and idioms and to consolidate knowledge of grammar. To provide insight into Germany's society and culture.

What will we cover?

Education; talk about plans for the future and wishes; express opinions; describe a flat; understand DIY tips; talk about advantages and disadvantages of means of transport.
Grammar: express something in the future; subordinate clauses with "dass"; perfect; subjunctive with "würde" and "hätte"; prepositions with accusative and dative; "deshalb"; "werden" in the present and imperfect; passive voice; "lassen".

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

-talk about education, the future and wishes

-describe accommodation

-talk about advantages and disadvantages of means of transport

-express an opinion

-use subordinate clauses with greater confidence

-communicate in the perfect tense

-feel more confident about the use of prepositions with dative/accusative (Wechselpräpositionen)

- use "würde" and "hätte"

-use "deshalb"

-use "werden" in the present tense and imperfect

-start using the passive voice.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Students should have recently studied German for at least 2 years (1.5 hours per week) or equivalent. European Framework = A2.2

It is also essential that you have some knowledge of basic grammar terminology such as: a verb, a noun and conjugation. It would be helpful if you had knowledge of more intermediate grammar terminology such as: dative, accusative, subordinate and main clause.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.
