This practical course covers how to glaze your fired work.
What will we cover?
This course will cover the difference between stoneware and earthenware glazes and firing temperatures. It will explain briefly the nature of a glaze and how to apply glazes. Following the workshop, glazed work will then be fired, ready for collection later in the term. As part of the workshop you will be encouraged to keep notes, or update an existing notebook, on your glazing decisions.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Explain the difference between stoneware and earthenware - Demonstrate how to effectively and safely glaze your finished work, by dipping, pouring or brushing glazes - Make decisions on which standard department glazes to use to enhance your ceramic work.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
This workshop is suitable both for beginners and for more advanced students. Please do not book this course if you have not attended a course at City Lit.
You should be able to follow simple verbal instructions to support demonstrations, hand-outs, for health and safety information, and will be invited to take part in group discussion.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
The course will be taught through a mixture of practical demonstrations, group discussion, 1:1 advice and support.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Please ask your course tutor. Tools are available within the department for use but you may want to purchase your own.

At the end of the course you will be given information about further courses available for those who wish to continue.
