What is the course about?

This is an introduction to the language, philosophy and theology of the Church Fathers.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We shall be reading texts, in both Greek and Latin, by the most famous of the Church Fathers, in chronological order. We shall survey the highlights of the Patristic corpus, from the first century Apostolic Fathers, via such luminaries as Origen and Tertullian, to Augustine and Jerome and Athanasius. We shall be translating around the class and discussing matters both grammatical and theological.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- read the Church Fathers fluently in the original language and
- understand the development of early Christian doctrine, both before and after the Council of Nicaea.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

You will need to have studied Latin and Greek for about four years and have a working knowledge of Christianity and the Bible.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This will be a reading group, translating and discussing texts. There will be about 3 hours of preparation each week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

There will be no further costs. The texts will be posted on Google Classroom.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Next term, the group will move on an in depth reading of one particular set text, chosen by the class.
