What is the course about?

The course gives students the chance to practice their speaking skills. The teacher will bring new topics to discuss every week and will prompt the conversation with different stimuli such as questions, requests for opinions, and brief exercises. Although the grammar is not a focus of this course, the teacher will signal and correct the main mistakes and will be at the students' disposal in case there is a need to clarify some concepts in order to improve learners' accuracy and confidence while speaking.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

- Informal and formal speaking practice
- Spoken accuracy
- Fluency
- Vocabulary knowledge of different topics, tailored to the interests of the class.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Have greater confidence in your speaking
- Speak with more accuracy
- Speak Italian more fluently
- Discuss a variety of topics in Italian with a broader vocabulary.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is intended for lower intermediate students of Italian. For City Lit students, that will mean students at Italian 2 Upper. You should have studied Italian for at least 2 years.
If you are an Italian 2 Lower student (in your second year of study), please see LN2900, Italian 2 Lower Conversation.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

If you are not already enrolled on one of our mainstream Italian courses, the tutor would be happy to advise you on your level.

Luca Gastaldi

Luca is from Piemonte, in the north west of Italy. He studied Media and Communications at the University of Turin and moved to London in 2009. In 2014, he spent some time in Delhi, India, where he worked in the library of the Italian Cultural Centre, rediscovered his love for Italian literature and decided to become a language teacher. He retrained the following year, earning a Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults, and has been teaching ever since. He has been teaching Italian at City Lit since 2018. He likes to create a relaxed and fun environment in the classroom, so that all students can participate, learn and have a good time. Here is what some of Luca’s students have said about him: “Luca is informative and knowledgeable and explains everything clearly. He makes the lessons fun and is, above all, patient.” SUE “Luca is an excellent teacher. He is lively and makes learning fun at the same time as being very clear on grammar rules and pronunciation.” SANDIE “We were all nervous about changing to online classes, but Luca has turned Zoom into a really effective place to learn. We laugh a lot, learn new skills (not just Italian) and have become great friends.” CATHERINE
