What is the course about?

Italian 3 upper is designed to help you delve deeper into Italian grammar and vocabulary, and you'll be refining some grammar points covered previously to improve your fluency and accuracy.You'll be using more complex language and vocabulary, and you'll find yourself better able to express yourself in a wider range of situations.

What will we cover?

Based on units 6 & 7 of Nuovo Espresso 3 (Alma Edizioni)

Topics: contemporary family issues; festivals: traditions and attitudes

Grammar: the subjunctive mood; If-clauses; conditional tenses;.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- describe and discuss family issues & festivals
- express opinions on newspaper articles & extracts from literary texts
- express wishes & preferences
- extract detailed information when listening to dialogues & interviews
- use the subjunctive mood more accurately (including with nonostante, sebbene, benché & malgrado)
- use If-clauses (subjunctive & conditional).

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 3: upper - This course is suitable for you if you have studied the Italian language for about 3/4 years or lived in the country. You should also have an interest in Italian culture.

You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?



Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Roberto Minardi

Roberto moved to London in 1999. In 2002, he took a Diploma in Teaching Foreign Languages, and since then he has taught Italian in various colleges and universities. In 2005 he gained a CELTA qualification and moved to Central America for about a year. There he began teaching English, a job he carried on doing for various years on his return to England. Teaching English to speakers of other languages gave him the opportunity to work with students from diverse educational backgrounds, and allowed him to refine the technique of using the target language in class. Roberto strongly believes in helping students to build a positive attitude towards using Italian as much as possible, and to overcome the inhibition adults often experience, so that they can enjoy using the language. He went on to get a Joint BA in French Studies & Spanish and Latin American Studies. He has published several volumes of poetry in Italian. In addition to his interest in languages and literature, he has done extensive personal study in areas such as Italian Baroque, 19th and 20th century Italian art and history, and Italian dialects. Roberto enjoys sharing his studies and knowledge in class.
