On this course you will improve your oral and written fluency in Italian by reading and discussing extracts from newspaper articles and literary texts as well as watching TV programmes and listening to authentic audio materials. You will also revise/consolidate grammar in order to improve accuracy in the spoken and written language.

This is a live online course. You will need:

- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

Based on unit 10 of Nuovo Espresso 3 (Alma Edizioni)

Topics: places of interest in Italy

Grammar: passive form; impersonal forms; more uses of subjunctive.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- describe places & experiences
- read & talk about Italian places of interest
- extract specific information from written itineraries
- give & ask for specific information
- comment on current issues & literature
- use the passive form
- use impersonal forms.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

Stage 3: upper - This course is suitable for you if you have studied the Italian language for about 3/4 years or lived in the country. You should also have an interest in Italian culture.

For further details of the specific foreign language skills required for this level, please see the languages self-assessment chart, using the link at the top of this page. You can also find the chart at the start of the languages section in our course guide. You will also need to be able to respond to simple instructions and read course documents in English and be at ease with the use of number for daily activities (e.g. using money, telling the time, etc).

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

Our courses are characterised by spoken interaction and communication. Typical activities include pair work, group work, role plays and games. A range of resources will be used to support your learning including presentations, hand-outs, and audio-visual material.
Homework is highly recommended to consolidate learning.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

Title of book: Nuovo Espresso 3

Note: you might not cover all the activities in the book during the course.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Depending on your level at the end of the course: another Italian 3 Upper course if you need to consolidate; Italian 4, or Italian A-level course if you are ready to move up a level. Please ask your tutor for advice.

Luca Gastaldi

Luca is from Piemonte, in the north west of Italy. He studied Media and Communications at the University of Turin and moved to London in 2009. In 2014, he spent some time in Delhi, India, where he worked in the library of the Italian Cultural Centre, rediscovered his love for Italian literature and decided to become a language teacher. He retrained the following year, earning a Certificate in Language Teaching to Adults, and has been teaching ever since. He has been teaching Italian at City Lit since 2018. He likes to create a relaxed and fun environment in the classroom, so that all students can participate, learn and have a good time. Here is what some of Luca’s students have said about him: “Luca is informative and knowledgeable and explains everything clearly. He makes the lessons fun and is, above all, patient.” SUE “Luca is an excellent teacher. He is lively and makes learning fun at the same time as being very clear on grammar rules and pronunciation.” SANDIE “We were all nervous about changing to online classes, but Luca has turned Zoom into a really effective place to learn. We laugh a lot, learn new skills (not just Italian) and have become great friends.” CATHERINE
