ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology: fast-track

Gain a recognised qualification in reflexology which will enable you to practise professionally. This is a FASTRACK, low cost course taught by experienced industry professionals. You must have completed the ‘ITEC massage diploma’ or equivalent and preferably an introductory reflexology course.

(equivalent being an Ofqual recognised qualifaction e.g. City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Massage - Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Massage - VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Massage). There is one session per week on this course. It is every Sunday for 13 weeks.

The Free Courses for Jobs initiative is for Londoners aged 24 or over at the start of the course who are: on a low-income; or on certain benefits; or do not have a full level 3 qualification. For more information Click here


The course fee is £1029.00 payable at the time of your enrolment. If you are unable to pay the course fees, you can choose to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan from Student Finance England (SFE) to help cover the course fee, repayable after the course ends. What is the course about?

Learn how to give a professional reflexology treatment and record the details of a treatment to the required standards as set down by the ITEC syllabus and complete a practical exam. On successful completion of the course students will gain the ITEC (International Therapy Examination Council) Diploma in Reflexology which will allow a student to gain insurance via EMBODY and practise reflexology professionally.

- You should be aware that a minimum of 80% attendance is necessary to complete the course.
- You are expected to participate to the best of your ability and to adhere to the colleges Equal Opportunities Policy
- The policies of the college will be discussed during the first session.
- Students are required to undertake and record 100 treatments over the duration of the course as per ITEC.
- Due to the nature of this course, you will not be entitled to transfer to a different course after the course has started

Please note that you are required to obtain a First Aid Certificate whilst on the course or be working towards one:- City Lit offers one day Emergency First Aid courses for therapists.

What will we cover?

ITEC syllabus Unit 381: Provide Reflexology for Complementary Therapies

The course is wide-ranging including areas on the ITEC syllabus: history, theory, philosophy and techniques used in reflexology, zones, reading and mapping of the feet, related anatomy, contraindications, and reflective practice.

This will enable you to:
a) Prepare yourself and an appropriate treatment environment in accordance with current legislation
b) Consult with clients - including evaluating contraindications and contra actions when applying Reflexology
c) Perform and be able to adapt treatments when necessary
d) Explain principles, theories and techniques of reflexology treatments including reflex points and zones
e) Describe the history, philosophy and role of Reflexology and evaluate the physiological and psychological effects
f) Provide suitable home care advice
g) Provide critical evaluation of techniques and treatments
h) Reflect upon your work and profession as a therapist

Practical: External reading of the feet. Techniques and sequence. Hygiene and sterilisation. Preparation of the work place. Interpretations of reflexes. Consultations. Record keeping. Hand reflexology. Client care and comfort. Contraindications. Presentation and professional image of practitioner.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Perform a full reflexology treatment using a variety of thumb and finger techniques and mediums
- Competently carry out a consultation with intended clients prior to treatment
- Over the course, produce and record 100 treatments to be handed in to ITEC as part of the formal assessment
- Recognise when reflexology is contraindicated either wholly or partially
- Reach the required standard necessary to sit the ITEC examination
- Work within a standard code of professional ethics which will enable you to insure yourself against public liability.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Reflexology

You would have completed all units from the syllabus of the ITEC Level 3 Diploma in massage (or equivalent)

EQUIVALENT QUALIFICATIONS

For a qualification to be considered an equivalent, it must be a level 3 certificate or diploma and be registered under: The Qualifications and Credit Framework: QCF. E.g. City and Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Massage - Active IQ Level 3 Diploma in Massage - VTCT Level 3 Diploma in Massage

If you do not have a QCF qualification, it is YOUR responsibility to have the qualification validated by the appropriate awarding body. There may be charges associated with this which are not included in the course fees.

If you have an international qualification, then you can use the NARIC validation service, www.naric.org.uk
There is a charge for this service and again, this is not included in the course fees.

You will also need to have sufficient literacy, numeracy and ICT skills to include:

Reading:
Be able to use different texts to obtain and summarise information
Detect opinion, meaning and respond to points made within a text

Writing:
Use different styles, format and structure, formal and informal for different purposes or audiences
Write complex sentences with few errors

Speaking/listening:
Be able to listen to information and respond appropriately
Present information clearly and adapt verbal contributions to suit the audience and situation including discussions

Numeracy/Maths:
Extract, interpret and create information from lists, tables, graphs and charts
Understand percentages and fractions, using halves and quarters

ICT (Information & communication technology):
-Using ICT systems – Windows, Microsoft Office
-Finding, selecting and exchanging information – (web, email)
-Working with word processing.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a theoretical and practical course. The teaching methods will be: talk by tutor, pair work and group work. The students will be encouraged to contribute to learning sessions.

YOU WILL REQUIRE A MINIMUM OF 10 HOURS WORK EACH WEEK OUTSIDE OF CLASS TIME, PLUS A FURTHER 5 HOURS PER WEEK TO COMPLETE AND WRIT UP TREATMENT EVIDENCE / CASE STUDIES.
- You will need to find clients to undertake case studies outside of the class time.
- It is essential that you have access to a massage couch outside of class.
- You will need to also have access to a computer and the internet in order to research project work.
(facilities are available at City Lit)

This is a professional practitioner course including business elements. The use of ICT (Information & Communication Technology) skills is also required.

ALL ASSIGNMENTS, CASE STUDIES AND TREATMENT EVIDENCE FORMS MUST BE WORD PROCESSED.

City Lit is committed to the delivery of functional skills, the supported learning centre has various resources for students without access to computers or the internet.

Course books - An Introductory Guide to Reflexology, by Louise Tucker. Other book recommendations will be given on commencement of course

Practical sessions at Collage:
- The collage will provide towles, wipes,sanitiser and mediums for practice in collage and for exams.
- The collage will provide 1 gender neutral branded Polo Shirt, this is included in the course fees.

You will need to purchase the following items-
You will need to provide your own trousers and shoes for the practical exam. The trousers should be smart black trousers, notracksuits or joggers will be allowed. Shoes need to be Black, closed toes and flat - Sketches shoes or something similar are a good choice, trainers are ok but they need to be fully black and not blazoned with logos or coloured stripes etc.

THE UNIFORM COSTS ARE INCLUDED IN THE COURSE FEES, THERE IS NO REDUCTION IN THE COURSE FEES FOR STUDENTS WISHING TO PROVIDE THEIR OWN UNIFORM. If students wish to provide their own uniform, it must meet the standards set by the institute.

You will also need access to or purchase a massage couch to undertake treatments outside of the classroom time and you will need your own towels, reflexology mediums, wipes and sanitiser for performing treatments on clients outside of City Lit.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Students may want to go on to study other related therapies e.g. Indian Head Massage, Shiatsu, Traditional Thai Massage, ITEC Level 3 Aromatherapy or other continued professional development courses.
