What is the course about?

This blended level 3 diploma in sports massage is designed for those who have recently completed the level 3 diploma in massage (including anatomy and physiology) or equivalent. This course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to offer sports massage treatments and enable you to progress onto the level 4 certificate in sports massage. This is a blended programme, you will attend three weekend input sessions and access resources via our online platform.

What will we cover?

This blended course will equip you with the knowledge and skills to give sports massage, including event treatments. You will attend three input weekends which are spaced out to allow you to complete your coursework and engage with the online resources.

It is a requirement that you hold a level 3 massage qualification, including anatomy and physiology, which was completed within the last three years. Please submit your evidence when applying.

The course is composed of four mandatory units:

1) iUSP150: Professional practice in sports massage
2) iUSP174: Principles of Health & Fitness
3) iUSP178: Sports Massage Treatments
4) iUSP181: Understand the Principles of Soft Tissue Dysfunction

You will have already completed your level 3 Anatomy and Physiology unit with your existing qualification. If you have not, please look at FRQ20 ITEC Level 3,4,5 Certificate in Sports Massage.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- Review and confidently locate bony structures and skeletal muscles of the body.
- Outline the key principles of exercise and fitness.
- Discuss your role as a sports massage professional.
- Perform assessments to your client to identify an appropriate treatment.
- Perform classical sports massage techniques.
- Perform event massage technique.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

This course is set at level 3, you must have successfully completed the “ITEC Level 3 Diploma in Massage” or equivalent within the last three years. You will be required to complete a portfolio of coursework which will be submitted to ITEC at the end of your studies.This will include case studies and assignments which will require time outside of the classroom to complete.

This is a blended course, you will be expected to engage with the online resources throughout this course via our virtual learning platform (Google Classroom) between sessions. Please ensure you have access to a computer and are familiar with accessing Google to ensure you get the most from your training.

This course is designed for those who are comfortable with working independently, if you would like to have more tutor support, please look at FRQ20 ITEC Level 3,4,5 Certificate in Sports Massage.

As a massage student at City Lit you are welcomed to attend our massage club and study skills sessions which run on Thursday. This workshop is designed to support students to develop their confidence with completing coursework and treatment.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

This is a blended course, you will attend three input weekends at Cit Lit. It is your responsibility to organise your time to manage your studies and complete the set coursework within the set time frames.

A minimum of ten hours of home study per week is essential to successfully complete this course.

During the input weekends you will be taught using a broad range of approaches including group work, practical demonstrations and flipped learning.

You will sit an end of course practical exam which is set by ITEC, you will also build your e-portfolio of evidence through completing set assignments and case studies.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

For practical sessions City Lit will supply towels, pillows and related laundry which is used in class. You will be required to bring the following:
- Massage media (oil, wax, lubricant etc)
- Appropriate clothing to give and receive treatment (shorts, vest is idea to bring as we will be performing examinations on each other)
- Pens and note paper for making notes, you are welcomed to bring your smart device if you prefer to make electronic notes.

Trevor England

Trevor is a registered and practising Osteopath, Complementary Therapist and Pilates instructor who has been working within the sector since 2004. He has a practice in Central London which enables him to share clinical experiences with his students. Trevor has had the opportunity to promote complementary medicine through interviews on BBC London and numerous magazine reviews. He has also written articles for industry and professional body magazines and presented at the CAM expo, London. Trevor began teaching Sports and Remedial Massage in 2007 and has since taught a variety of subjects for complementary therapy and fitness sectors throughout the UK. He is a fully qualified tutor, assessor and mentor/coach. Outside of complementary medicine, Trevor also works in teacher education at City Lit. Trevor began his Pilates journey from an early age as a part of dance training. He completed his Pilates qualification with STOTT PILATES and since qualifying, has taught at several Pilates studios and gyms.
