Develop your listening skills from Jazz harmony and ear training 1 to include more unusual forms, extended and altered harmony, and expand your knowledge of jazz repertoire. This practical class features playing tunes and improvisation over the study tunes. New knowledge and concepts will be applied directly to your instrument.
What will we cover?
- Understanding common and unusual compositional forms - Extending rhythmic and melodic awareness - Bass line movements (e.g. tritone substitution) and extended/altered voice-leading - Further scale options including melodic minor - Practice improvising on the study tunes - jazz standards, blues, modal pieces, rhythm changes, Bossa nova and Samba.
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Enjoy a greater knowledge of compositional forms and repertoire - Show improvement in what you can recognise by ear - Advance your improvising and ability to work well in a small ensemble.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have completed Jazz harmony and ear training 1 or have equivalent education and experience. You are able to improvise and show a good understanding of the jazz idiom. This level of study matches the Tuesday intermediate jazz course (MG602).
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through group listening, discussion and singing of relevant musical lines and parts, class exercises (dictation and chord recognition) to learn the tunes aurally, and ensemble practice to play them.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring your instrument to every class. 2 pianos and amplifiers are available in the classroom.
Cerys Hogg is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser. Whilst studying Fine Art, specialising in performance art and installation, she developed her musical skills as a jazz vocalist, drummer and pianist. A scholarship allowed her to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the post-graduate Jazz and Studio Music course. She specialised in jazz voice, developing a personal approach to improvisation, harmony and arranging. Cerys combines her work as multimedia artist, composer and musician in KOGG, an experimental electronic duo with fellow City Lit tutor, Selena Kay. They create music by sampling vocals, sound objects, and home-made instruments, combining composed and improvised material with live and manipulated video. KOGG perform in the UK and Europe and have played festivals including Aldeburgh and Huddersfield Contemporary Music. Cerys is an experienced teacher, with a PGCE from the Institute of Education, who has taught at City Lit since 2003. She has a reputation for delivering active, entertaining and engaging classes, and a drive to demystify the elements of music, making it an accessible and enjoyable for all.
