What is the course about?
Develop your listening skills to include more unusual song forms, extended and altered harmony. Expand your collection of jazz repertoire. This practical class features playing tunes and improvisation on the study tunes. New knowledge and concepts will be applied directly to your instrument.
What will we cover?
- Understanding more unusual compositional forms
- Extending rhythmic and melodic awareness
- Study more advanced bass line movements (e.g. tritone substitution) and extended/altered voice-leading
- Further scale options including melodic minor
- Practice improvising on the study tunes
- jazz standards, blues, modal tunes, rhythm changes, Bossa Nova, and contemporary repertoire.
What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Enjoy a greater knowledge of compositional forms and repertoire
- Advance your improvising and ability to work well in a small ensemble
- Be confident about playing in company.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have completed Jazz harmony and ear training 2A and 2B or be able to demonstrate equivalent competence and experience. You should be able to improvise already and show a good understanding of the jazz idiom.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through group listening, discussion and singing of relevant musical lines and parts, class exercises (dictation and chord recognition), learning the tunes and ensemble practice.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Bring your instrument. Pianos and amplifiers are supplied.

Cerys Hogg is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser. Whilst studying Fine Art, specialising in performance art and installation, she developed her musical skills through performing as a jazz vocalist, drummer and pianist. A scholarship allowed her to study at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama on the post-graduate Jazz and Studio Music course. Here she specialised in jazz voice developing a personal approach to improvisation, harmony and arranging. Currently Cerys is combining her work as both multimedia artist and musician. She performs in KOGG, an experimental electronic music duo with fellow City Lit tutor, Selena Kay. Together they create music by sampling vocals, sound objects, and home-made instruments, combining composed and improvised material. They have performed live and are in the process of creating an album. An experienced teacher with a PGCE from the Institute of Education, Cerys has a reputation for delivering entertaining and engaging classes. She has a drive to demystify the elements of music, making it an accessible and enjoyable experience for all.
