Develop your listening skills from Jazz harmony and ear training 2 to include unusual tunes and forms, extended and altered harmony. Expand your jazz repertoire. This practical class features playing tunes and improvisation over the study tunes. New knowledge and concepts will be applied directly to your instrument.
What will we cover?
- Understanding more unusual compositional forms - Extending your rhythmic and melodic awareness - Study more advanced bass line movements (e.g. tritone substitution) and extended/altered voice-leading - Further scale options including melodic minor - Practice improvising on the study tunes - jazz standards, bebop, blues, modal pieces, rhythm changes, Bossa nova, and contemporary repertoire
What will I achieve? By the end of this course you should be able to...
- Enjoy greater knowledge of compositional forms and repertoire - Advance your improvising and ability to work well in a small ensemble - Be confident about playing in public.
What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?
You should have completed Jazz harmony and ear training 2, the Tuesday intermediate jazz course, or have equivalent experience. You are able to improvise already and show a good understanding of the jazz idiom.
How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?
You will be taught through group listening, discussion and singing of relevant musical lines and parts, class exercises (dictation and chord recognition) to learn the tunes aurally prior to ensemble practice. You will be encouraged to record practice exercises and post your work in the google classroom.
Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?
Della has enjoyed working at City Lit for over 3 decades, teaching, managing, learning. After training in contemporary dance, Della became consumed by drama and music work. Music came to dominate, playing in bands, song writing, teaching for, and advising, the Youth Service and Adult Education. Performing and writing arrangements for pop and jazz a cappella has been a 30 year journey. So too the teaching of jazz musicianship. Gratitude is due to early mentor Amit Sen for introducing 'the jazz thing'.
Please note: We reserve the right to change our tutors from those advertised. This happens rarely, but if it does, we are unable to refund fees due to this. Our tutors may have different teaching styles; however we guarantee a consistent quality of teaching in all our courses.
