  10. Art, Image and History in Later Anglo-Saxon England

    This new course illustrates and explains some of the most important and intriguing works of Anglo-Saxon art from A.D. c. 850 to 1100. Beginning with the art being produced in the later 9th century and homing in on the reign of Alfred with the brooch in the Ashmolean, through the glorious 10th century renaissance and the reign of Athelstan, we conclude our course with the Bayeux Tapestry and the Norman Conquest. Each work is set in its historical and cultural context, collectively providing a coherent and fascinating account of Early English achievement.

    Indigenous Australian art has, in recent years, been increasingly exhibited and discussed in Britain. Yet little is known about the history and development of this art movement and the oeuvres of the artists responsible for its creation. This introductory course will provide a history of how Indigenous Australian artists have changed and challenged the course of national and international art fields in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.

  15. Being ecological 2: Ecological Thought in cultures of climate crisis

    This Culture course will give students an opportunity to engage with cultures of climate crisis – both the complex challenges we face and a wide-range of exciting theoretical initiatives and artistic practices that attempt to foreground and transform ecological dimensions of existence. Drawing on theoretical and literary texts, films, performance art, and political activism, we will explore radical ways of rethinking and reinhabiting our relations with more-than-human worlds, and how they open new possibilities for living on a damaged planet. Students will also have the chance to pursue their own research projects.
