What is the course about?

The course is designed to consolidate and deepen your knowledge of Latin grammar, preparing you to read and discuss unadapted texts.

This is a live online course. You will need:
- Internet connection. The classes work best with Chrome.
- A computer with microphone and camera is best (e.g. a PC/laptop/iMac/MacBook), or a tablet/iPad/smart phone/iPhone if you don't have a computer.
- Earphones/headphones/speakers.
We will contact you with joining instructions before your course starts.

What will we cover?

We will use Reading Latin, by Peter Jones and Keith Sidwell (2 volumes) and then move on to other texts suggested by the tutor. The starting point will be confirmed soon. Grammar will be accompanied by the reading of texts by Latin authors.

What will I achieve?
By the end of this course you should be able to...

- demonstrate a solid knowledge of complex grammar
- read and translate Latin texts with fluency and confidence
- appreciate the themes, language and style of the texts read.

What level is the course and do I need any particular skills?

The course is suitable for those who have studied Latin for approximately 4 years or have an equivalent knowledge (A Level or first year of a university course). As this course is taught in English, please read the outline carefully to decide if you may benefit from support with your English skills to help you take part fully in this class.

How will I be taught, and will there be any work outside the class?

The course consists of translation, grammar instructions and grammar exercises with a high level of student interaction (individual, pair and group work). Students are expected to do the homework regularly and participate in oral classroom activities. Homework will require approx. 2-3 hours per week.

Are there any other costs? Is there anything I need to bring?

The course reading is a set of adapted texts prepared by the teacher. This will be supplied as printable pdf files.

When I've finished, what course can I do next?

Latin 4 upper: module 1.

Sean Gabb

Sean has been teaching Greek and Latin for a very long time, and he loves what he does. While not doing that, he's made the time to write around forty books. These include twelve historical novels, by "Richard Blake," and published by Hodder & Stoughton. They also include editions of Book VI of "The Aeneid," the "Historia Langobardorum" of Paul the Deacon, and various parts of St Jerome's Latin version of The New Testament. One of his science fiction novels was nominated for the 2015 Prometheus Award.
